She lost her leg yet she dared to climb Mt. Everest with an artificial leg. With great courage and confidence she could overcome her handicap and do the impossible task.

What inspiration do you get from Arunima?
Answer:
Arunima is a great source of inspiration of hope, courage and confidence for all. The way she fought back against the thugs on the train shows her boldness. Even after losing her leg, she was determined to scale Mt. Everest with an artificial leg and she proved it. This is an uncomparable example of courage.

Answer:
Yes, I know a girl – Manisha – in my neighbourhood. It was afternoon and everybody in our society was enjoying their siesta. Taking the opportunity, a thief entered Manisha’s house. Her father was at his workplace and her mother was resting in her bedroom. Manisha was doing some study-work in her room.

The thief rushed into her mother’s room, woke her up and holding a big knife close to her neck, demanded keys of their safe. Hearing the noise, Manisha came out of her room and saw the thief threatening her mother with a knife.

Without wasting a single moment, she aimed and threw a small flowerpot at his raised hand with knife. With this sudden attack the knife dropped from his hand and he was so much frightened that he took to his heels, Thus, Manisha saved her mother’s life. What a brave girl!

Suppose you were In the train compartment near Arunima. What would you have done?
Answer:
Had I been In the train compartment near Arunima. I would have sneaked to the other passengers and pleaded them to fight against the thugs. If all of them had come together and attacked the thugs. we could have saved Arunima from being thrown out of the train.

Question 6.
What would have happened if all the passengers had stood by Arunima in the train?
Answer:
If all the passengers had stood by Arunima in the train, Arunima might have been saved from being thrown out of the train. Besides, thugs also might have withdrawn themselves seeing the passengers standing in defence of Arunima. The thugs might have escaped fearing that those standing by Arunima would attack them to defend Arunima.

Question 7.
If you were a judge, what punishment would you give to the four young men ?
Answer:
If I were a judge I would have sentenced them for at least five years of rigourous imprisonment. Since all the four ones were attacking a helpless, lonely girl, they deserved to be punished severely. Their act of throwing the girl out of a moving train was a sheer brutal act and they must not be spared at any cost.

What steps should be taken to stop such sad incidents ?
Answer:
The awareness and sensitivity of co-passengers matter a lot in the sad incident of Arunima. If co-travellers were sensitive and courageous, unitedly they could have scared the thugs attacking a single, helpless young girl.

Secondly, armed railway policemen should be deployed almost in each compartment to deal with such situations. Thirdly, digital surveillance should be installed in almost each compartment to observe the goings-on inside. If something wrong is observed, immediate help should be rushed.

‘Arise, awake and stop not till the goal is reached.’ Explain the famous quote of Swami Vivekanand in the light of Arunima’s enthusiasm for reaching her goal.
Answer:
Arunima lost one of her legs in an unfortunate incident, but it never affected her spirit. Her dream was to scale Mt. Everest. An artificial leg was fitted and she rose once more to fulfil her dream.

It was almost impossible for a mountaineer to climb with only one leg, still she did not lose courage and went on trying to scale different heights and collected enough confidence to reach her goal. Finally she could manage to be at the top of the world. Thus, she literally followed the quote of Swami Vivekanand and proved it to be worth practising.

What unfortunate incident took place with Arunima while travelling on a train ?
Answer:
Once while Arunima was travelling by a train and was dozing on her berth, she felt a hand tugging her gold chain. She woke up and saw four or five desperate young men surrounding her. All were drunken and no help was possible, so Arunima had to fight them.

One of the robbers kicked her hard and she lost her balance and flew out of the train. In midair she was rebounded by another train on the next track. The ping- pong went on and finally she fell down unable to recollect her leg from the track and lost it for ever.

Question 2.
What support did Arunima get after her accident?
Answer:
Arunima had lost her leg in the accident. On the intervention of the PM, she was admitted to AIIMS, Delhi. The union government bore the entire cost of her treatment.

AIIMS began issuing daily medical bulletin on her status. Young people, auto-drivers and roadside vendors carried out candle march to galvanize support for her and to pray for her recovery. Thus she got very warm support from various fronts.

Question 3.
What was the source of inspiration for Arunima to climb Mt. Everest?
Answer:
After her unfortunate accident”, Arunima was taking treatment in AIIMS, Delhi. At that time, her brother-in-law suddenly asked her ‘Everest chadogi ?’ after reading in a newspaper that ‘no female amputee had ever scaled Everest.’

She took it very seriously and determined to try for it, so that she could hold a record. After some time she showed her willingness, “Theek hat; hum karengey.” This is how she got inspired to climb Mt. Everest.

What efforts did Arunima put into to achieve her goal of climbing Mt. Everest?
Answer:
As soon as Arunima’s artificial leg got fitted, she set her eyes on a mountain. Almost a year after her accident, she joined the mountaineering training institute set up by Bachendri Pal near Uttarkashi.

Bachendri Pal always pumped confidence in her and motivated her to overcome her feeling of being handicapped. With this motivation Arunima could climb 21,798 feet high Chamsar Kangdi mountain in Ladakh and got compliments from Bachendri Pal ‘Meri ShernV. This is how her spirit was boosted up and she was all prepared to scale Mt. Everest.

The last track of the peak was a very dangerous, narrow path. Arunima slipped and fell once, even her oxygen was running out. She was struggling with her paining leg.

Even her sherpa, Neema Kancha, insisted that she must quit, but Arunima was desperate. She kept on drag – walk – drag and finally she made it. She was on the top of the world hoisting her flag at 10.55 a.m. on May 21, 2013.

પરિચય અરૂણિમા સિંહા નામની અપંગ યુવતીની એવરેસ્ટ સર કર્યાના સંઘર્ષની વાર્તા છે. રાષ્ટ્રીય કક્ષાની વૉલીબૉલ ખેલાડી અરૂણિમા એક વાર ટ્રેનમાં મુસાફરી કરી રહી હતી ત્યારે ચાર ઠગે તેના ગળાની સોનાની ચેન તોડવા પ્રયત્ન કર્યો.

બાહોશ એવી અરૂણિમાએ એકલે હાથે તેમનો સામનો કર્યો, પરંતુ દારૂ પીધેલા ચાર યુવાનોએ તેને ચાલતી ટ્રેનમાંથી બહાર ફેંકી દીધી. બરાબર એ જ સમયે બાજુના પાટા પરથી ટ્રેન પસાર થઈ અને અરૂણિમા બંને ટ્રેન વચ્ચે ફંગોળાતી રહી.

તેથી જે એક યુવાન મારી શક્તિનો તાગ મેળવવા પ્રયત્ન કરતો હતો, તેને મેં કૉલરથી પકડ્યો અને પાછળ ધકેલ્યો. તેમનામાંથી બીજા બેને મેં લાત મારી. ચાલતી ટ્રેનમાં એક અસામાન્ય લડાઈ શરૂ થઈ ગઈ હતી.

એ વરુઓએ મારી ચેન ખેંચવાનો એક બીજો પ્રયત્ન કર્યો. છતાંય ઝનૂની બની ચૂકેલા તેમાંના એકે તેની પૂરી તાકાતથી મને એક જોરદાર લાત મારી ત્યાં સુધી હું તેમનો પ્રતિકાર કરતી રહી. સંતુલન ગુમાવી ચૂકેલી હું મારી મૂળસ્થિતિમાં આવી શકી નહિ. હું ખરેખર ટ્રેનમાંથી બહાર ફેંકાઈ ચૂકી હતી; છતાંય મારો મોબાઇલ ફોન મારા હાથમાં જ હતો.

હું હવામાં જ હતી ને ત્યાંથી બાજુના પાટા પરથી પસાર થતી બીજી ટ્રેન સાથે અથડાઈ. મારું શરીર તે ટ્રેનને અથડાઈ મારી ટ્રેન પર પાછું 3 ફેંકાયું. ગુરુત્વાકર્ષણ બળથી હું નીચે પડું એ પહેલાં થોડીક સેકન્ઝ મારું (આ) અહીંથી તહીં ફંગોળાવાનું ચાલું રહ્યું. મારા (તમામ) પ્રયત્નો છતાંય મારો ડાબો પગ પાટા પર (જ) પડ્યો.

‘ઘચ્ચ અવાજ સાથે મારો પગ કપાઈ ગયો. મારી (વેદનાપૂર્ણ) પ્રબળ ચીસ સાંભળનાર ત્યાં કોઈ નહોતું. હું ઘડીભર સાવ હલ્યા ચાલ્યા વગર ટ્રેનની પાછળની લાલ લાઇટ અંધારામાં મંદ થઈ ઓઝલ થાય છે ત્યાં સુધી જોતી રહી. પછી હું મૂછિત થઈ ગઈ.

પ્રધાનમંત્રીની દરમિયાનગીરીથી મને AIMS, દિલ્લી ખાતે દાખલ કરવામાં આવી. મારી સારવારનો તમામ ખર્ચ સંઘસરકાર ઉપાડવાની હતી. તરત જ AIIMS એ મારી (વર્તમાન) સ્થિતિનો ટૂંકો દૈનિક વૈદકીય અહેવાલ પ્રગટ કરવાનું શરૂ કર્યું.

મને જણાવવામાં આવ્યું કે યુવાનો, ઑટોરિક્ષા ચાલકો અને રસ્તા પરના વેચાણ કરતા) ફેરિયાઓ મને સમર્થન આપવા તેમજ મારા સાજા થવા માટે મીણબત્તી કૂચ કાઢી રહ્યા છે. શ્રેષ્ઠ અને અત્યાધુનિક તકનીકીની મદદથી મળતી સારવારને મેં (હકારાત્મક) પ્રતિક્રિયા આપવાનું શરૂ કર્યું.

મહિલાનો એવરેસ્ટ ચડવાનો વિક્રમ મારા નામે નોંધાય … મેં એ વિશે થોડીક વાર વિચાર્યું અને પછી સાહિબને આ પડકાર ઝીલવાના મારા રાજીપા વિશે જણાવ્યું. “ઠીક હૈ, હમ કરેંગે,” મેં કહ્યું. હવે મારી પાસે અપેક્ષા રાખવા માટે એક જીવનલક્ષ્ય, એક ધ્યેય, સપનાં જોવાનું એક કારણ હતું. તે (કાંઈ) સરળ બનવાનું નહોતું. પણ મારા સમગ્ર જીવન દરમિયાન કશુંય સરળતાથી મળ્યું નહોતું.

મને લાગ્યું કે મારો પુનર્જન્મ થયો હતો. પછી મેં મારો કૃત્રિમ પગ આવી પહોંચે તેની રાહ જોવી શરૂ કરી. અંતે જ્યારે તે આવ્યો ત્યારે મારી ખુશીનો પાર ન હતો. આ કૃત્રિમ પગ મને (મારા) કુદરતી પગ જેવો જ લાગી રહ્યો હતો.

મને ભાગ્યે જ તેમાં ભેદ અનુભવાતો હતો. જે મારી સાથે સમગ્ર જીવન (દરમિયાન) જોડાયેલો હતો, તે “અજાણ્યા’ (પગ) સાથે મેં લગાવ કેળવવાનું શરૂ કર્યું. મેં (હવે) પર્વતને જ મારું લક્ષ બનાવ્યું હતું અને આ “અજાણ્યા’ની મદદથી મારી જાતને મારે તૈયાર કરવાની હતી.

Scene – 3.

મારા ટ્રેનમાંથી બહાર ફેંકાઈ ગયાના એક વર્ષ બાદ, હું 28 ફેબ્રુઆરી, 2012ના રોજ ઉત્તરકાશી પાસે બચેન્દ્રી પાલ દ્વારા સ્થાપિત તાલીમ સંસ્થા માટે ચાલી નીકળી. અમે ઉત્તરકાશી પહોંચી ગયાં હતાં, તે જણાવવા મેં બચેન્દ્રી પાલને ફોન કર્યો. તેણીને આશ્ચર્ય એ થયું કે અમે આટલા જલદી પહોંચી ગયાં હતાં.

ત્યારબાદ મારો (આત્મ) વિશ્વાસ અત્યંત વધી ગયો. બચેન્દ્રી પાલ મારામાં હરરોજ નવો વિશ્વાસ ‘ઉમેરે જતી હતી, “અરૂણિમા, તું અન્યો કરતાં ઘણી ચડિયાતી છે. આ લોકો અપંગતાથી પીડાય છે, નહિ કે તું; મને તારા માટે ગર્વ છે. પરંતુ એવરેસ્ટના આરોહણ પહેલાં તારે તારી જાતને સાબિત કરવાની છે. જો તું લડાખમાં (વેલ) 21,798 ફૂટ ઊંચા ચામસર કાંગડી

પર્વત પર ચડી જઈશ, તો તું (માનજે કે) એવરેસ્ટ પર તું હોઈશ જ.” (તને એવરેસ્ટ ચડતાં કશું રોકી નહિ શકે.) મેં તે (સાહસિક) પ્રવાસ સફળતાપૂર્વક પૂરો કર્યો. અમે 18,000 ફૂટની ઊંચાઈએ આવેલા ‘બેઝ કૅમ્પ” પહોંચીએ ત્યાં સુધીમાં તો ઓગણીસમાંથી સોળ સભ્યો (સાથી પર્વતારોહકો) નિવૃત્ત થઈ ચૂક્યા હતા.

બચેન્દ્રી પાસે બેઝ કૅમ્પ’ (પર) મારું અભિવાદન કર્યું. “મેરી શેરની’ કહી તે મને ઉમળકાભેર ભેટી પડી. સાંજે બચેન્દ્રી પાલે જણાવી દીધું કે, હું આખરે એવરેસ્ટ માટે તૈયાર હતી. તેણીએ મને (એ પણ) ખાતરી આપી કે તે મારા એવરેસ્ટ(ના) સપનાને સાકાર કરવા પુરસ્કર્તા બનવા ટાટા સ્ટીલના અધિકારીઓ સાથે વાત કરશે.

Scene – 4

હું એપ્રિલ 11, 2013ના રોજ એવરેસ્ટ બેઝ કૅમ્પ” આવી પહોંચી. ચાલતી ટ્રેનમાંથી બહાર ફેંકાઈ જવાને બરાબર બે વર્ષ પસાર થઈ ચૂક્યાં હતાં. મારો એક પગ કૃત્રિમ છે એવી કૅમ્પમાં કોઈને ખબર નહોતી. એક દિવસ પરત આવતાં, એક લપસણી સપાટી પર બે-એક વાર હું લપસી પડી હતી (અને) બરફથી મારો ડાબો પગ પલળી ગયો હતો.

બીજે દિવસે સવારે મેં આ કૃત્રિમ પગને તડકામાં સુકાવા મૂક્યો હતો. તે સમયે કેટલાક વિદેશીઓને ખબર પડી કે મારે માત્ર એક જ પગ હતો. ત્યારબાદ મારી લોકપ્રિયતા (અતિશય) વધી ગઈ.સાગર માથા(દરિયાનો દેવ એવરેસ્ટ શિખર માટેનું સ્થાનિક નામ)ના મારા અંતિમ ચડાણમાં નીમા કાંચા મારો પર્વતીય માર્ગદર્શક હતો.

તે એક ખૂબ જ સારો અને મદદકર્તા નેપાળી હતો. જો તે ખિજાય તો ક્યારેક મને વઢતો (પણ ખરો).એવરેસ્ટ શિખરની અંતિમ કેડી શરૂ થઈ. તે કેડી અત્યંત જોખમી, સાંકડી હતી. એક વાર હું લપસી પણ પડી (પણ ખરી), અરે, મારો ઑક્સિજન પણ ખતમ થઈ રહ્યો હતો. પીડા આપી

રહેલા મારા પગ સાથે હું સંઘર્ષ કરી રહી હતી. મારા શેરપાએ મને | (ચડવાનું) છોડી દેવા કહ્યું, પણ મારે પાછા નથી વળવાનું (એની) મને ખબર હતી. મારા શેરપાએ મારે પાછું વળી જવું જોઈએ એવો સતત આગ્રહ રાખ્યો, છતાંય હું (જબરદસ્તીથી) આગળ જ ધપતી રહી. “મારી પાસે શિખર પર પહોંચવા અને (મારા) દેશનો ધ્વજ લહેરાવવા સુધીનો પૂરતો ઑક્સિજન છે. ત્યારબાદ શું થશે એનાથી મને કોઈ ફેર પડતો નથી.”

મેં નીમા કાંચાને મક્કમતાથી જણાવી દીધું. યાદ રાખો, તમે (જ્યાં સુધી) હાર ન સ્વીકારો ત્યાં સુધી તમને કોઈ હરાવી શકતું નથી. હા, પ્રસંગોપાત્ત મળતી નિષ્ફળતાઓ (જરૂર) તમારી કસોટી કરશે, પણ પ્રયત્ન કરતા રહો.

સફળતાનાં કોઈક વાર તો જરૂર ખૂલશે. પછી જોયું કે મેં શિખર તરફ મારી જાતને (શ્રમપૂર્વક) ખેંચવાનું ચાલુ રાખ્યું, તો તે મારી પાછળ પાછળ આવી રહ્યો હતો. (થોડી વાર વ્યવસ્થિત) ચાલ્યું પાછું (શરીરને) પરાણે ખેંચ્યું.

આમ, અંત સુધી ચાલ્યા જ કર્યું. શિખર એ નાનકડા 20′ x 20ના આઇસટેબલ જેવું છે. મેં વિવિધ દેશોના કેટલાક ધ્વજને ગૌરવભેર લહેરાતા જોયા. મેં આ ક્ષણને મારા મનમાં એટલી બધી વાર આવી હતી (સ્મૃતિમાં સ્થિર કરી હતી) કે મને એવું જણાવવાની જરૂર નહોતી કે અંતે હું આવી પહોંચી હતી. 21 મે, 2013ના સવારના 10.55 કલાકે હું દુનિયાના સર્વોચ્ચ શિખરે હતી !

મને (તે સમયે) એકસાથે નાચવાનું, રડવાનું અને (ખડખડાટ) હસી પડવાનું મન થયું. મારું મન સતત બદલાયે જતી લાગણીઓનું કેલિડોસ્કોપ (બની ચૂક્યું) હતું. દરેકને જીવતા રહેવા એક કારણ (જોઈતું) હોય છે. કદાચ મારા માટે આ કારણ હતું. મેં મારા દેશનો વિક્રમ નોંધાવવા મારા બંને હાથ (શક્ય તેટલા) ઊંચા કરીને મારો ધ્વજ લહેરાવ્યો.
