Thirty-five boys and girls stared at me. I tried hard to keep my eyes on the floor to avoid strange looks. Then I saw a girl smiling like warm sunshine at me. She actually seemed to welcome me. When the teacher told me to sit next to Manisha, my frozen terror began to melt. “Hi, I’m Manisha.” Her voice had warm ring, her face was long, her eyes were dark and soft and hair long and brownish. રેલવેમાં કામ કરતા પિતાજી સાથે ઊછરવું એટલે વારંવાર ફરતા રહેવું. ભરૂચમાંની આ શાળા મારી પાંચમી શાળા હતી. હું હંમેશાં ‘નવી છોકરી ગણાતી. એક કે બે વાર હું મિત્રો બનાવી શકી. પરંતુ અમે એકબીજાને ઓળખીએ તે પહેલાં મારે ફરીથી “નવી છોકરી’ તરીકે નવી શાળામાં જવું પડતું.જેમનાં માતા-પિતાની નોકરી બદલીને પાત્ર હોય તેવા છોકરા-છોકરીને પડતી મુશ્કેલીઓની યાદી કરો.

1967ના ઑગસ્ટમાં એક દિવસ હું મારા નવા વર્ગખંડના પ્રવેશદ્વારમાં ઊભી હતી. હંમેશની જેમ કશાક અજાણ્યા ડરથી મને પેટમાં દુખતું હતું. તેથી હું ધ્રૂજતી હતી અને મારાં આંસુ રોકી રાખવાનો પ્રયત્ન કરી રહી હતી. પાંત્રીસ છોકરા-છોકરીઓ મને તાકી રહ્યાં હતાં. અજાણી નજરોને ટાળવા મેં મારી આંખો ભોંય પર રાખવા માટે સખત પ્રયત્ન કર્યો. પછી મેં મારા તરફ હૂંફાળા સૂર્યપ્રકાશ જેવું સ્મિત ફરકાવતી એક છોકરી જોઈ. તે ખરેખર તો મારું સ્વાગત કરતી હોય તેવી લાગી. જ્યારે મારા શિક્ષકે મને મનીષા જોડે બેસવાનું કહ્યું ત્યારે મારો થીજી ગયેલો ભય પીગળવા લાગ્યો.

હાઈ, હું મનીષા છું.” તેના અવાજમાં માયાળુ રણકાર હતો, તેનો ચહેરો ગોળ હતો, તેની આંખો કાળી અને મૃદુ હતી અને વાળ લાંબા અને ભૂખરા. અને દિવસ પૂરો થતાં મને ખબર પડી કે તેનું હૃદય 24 કૅરેટ (શુદ્ધ) સોનું હતું. તે મને સ્વાધ્યાયમાં મદદ કરતી, તેની બહેનપણીઓને મારાં વખાણ કરી પરિચય કરાવતી, “પત્ની ખરેખર સારી છોકરી છે.” પહેલા જ દિવસે એક વણકહ્યું વચન અપાયું હતું. મને અને મનીષાને ખબર પડી ગઈ કે અમે ઉત્તમ સખીઓ બનીશું.

અમે બંને હંમેશાં રેલવેના શાંત પાટા પર કે પછી શાળાની પાછળના બાગમાં સાથે જતાં. અમે વૅકેશનમાં જંગલમાં ભમતાં, માઉન્ટ આબુમાં સાથે રોકાતાં અને નવરાત્રિ મહોત્સવમાં ભાગ લેતાં. તે ઊંચી અને પાતળા બાંધાની હતી. હું નીચી અને હૃષ્ટપુષ્ટ હતી. તે ગણિતમાં હોશિયાર હતી, મને નવલકથાઓ વાંચવાનું ગમતું.

તે એક સારી ખેલાડી હતી ને મને રમતોમાં ખેંચી જતી. અમે વાતો કરતાં, ગાતાં, ઝઘડતાં અને રડતાં છતાં એક જ પાટલી પર બેસતાં. આનંદ, વિકાસ, શોધ અને તીવ્ર લાગણીઓથી ભરપૂર ત્રણ અદ્ભુત વરસ વહી ગયાં. મનીષાના પિતાને (નોકરીમાં બઢતી મળી અને તેમને આસામ જવું પડ્યું.

વચન આપ્યા મુજબ મનીષા અને હું પ્રસંગોપાત્ત પત્રો લખતાં. એ જમાનામાં લાંબા અંતરે ટેલિફોન કરવાનો તો પ્રશ્ન જ નહોતો. હું B.Sc.(વિજ્ઞાનના ત્રીજા વરસ)માં હતી ત્યારે તેનો છેલ્લો પત્ર આવેલો. તે એક ડૉક્ટરના પ્રેમમાં પડી હતી. તે તેને પરણી ગઈ હતી અને તેણે એક સુંદર છોકરીને જન્મ આપ્યો હતો.

મેં તરત જ વળતો પત્ર લખ્યો પણ કશો પ્રત્યુત્તર મળ્યો નહિ. મેં અનેક વાર (પત્રો) લખ્યા. છેવટે મારા પત્રો ‘સરનામું અજાણ્યું છે.’ એવા સિક્કા સાથે પાછા આવતાં. મને તેની કેટલી ચિંતા થતી! 19 વરસે લગ્ન કરવું અને બાળક હોવું! હું જાણતી હતી કે તે એક ખૂબ જ અદ્ભુત માતા બનશે.

મેં મારી M.Sc.(વિજ્ઞાન અનુસ્નાતક)ની ઉપાધિ મેળવી. વ્યાખ્યાતા તરીકે કામ કરવા લાગી અને લગ્ન કર્યું. મારાં બાળકો મોટાં થયાં, કૉલેજમાં ગયાં અને મારી દીકરી હવે માતા બની ગઈ હતી. હું ઘણી વાર મનીષા સાથેની મારી મૈત્રીની વાતો કરતી. મારા કુટુંબના સભ્યોને મારી ઉત્તમ સખી વિશે બધી ખબર હતી. એપ્રિલ, 2005ના ધોમધખતા દિવસે ટેલિફોનની ઘંટડી રણકી ઊઠી. “પત્ની છે?” “હા” “પત્ની ભાટિયા છે?”

પત્ની કેવી રીતે પ્રતિભાવ આપશે?

મેં ચિચિયારી પાડી. હું ઝરૂખામાં હતી. આખા શહેરે આ સાંભળ્યું હોવું જોઈએ. ગોળગોળ નાચતાં અને ઊંચાનીચા કૂદકા ભરતાં મેં હર્ષાવેશમાં બૂમો પાડી, “ઓહ, પ્રિય મનીષા, તું ક્યાં હતી?”

તેની આંખો શા માટે ભીની હતી તે તમે ધારી શકો?

પાંત્રીસ વરસ પહેલાં અમે છૂટાં પડ્યાં હતાં. તેણે મને શોધી કાઢી હતી. તે સ્વિડનમાં રહેતી હતી. જૂના કાગળના થપ્પા અને પેટીઓ છૂટાં પાડતાં ‘પત્રો’ એવું લખેલી એક જૂની પેટી તેણે ખોલી હતી. મારો 1975નો પત્ર તેમાં હતો. તેણે તાત્કાલિક ભરૂચમાં જેટલાં (માણસો) ભાટિયા અટકવાળાં રહેતાં હતાં તે બધાંને ફોન કર્યો. મારું સરનામું કોઈ જાણતું નહોતું, પણ તેણે આશા ન છોડી. તેણે મારી કૉલેજમાં ફોન કર્યો. કેટલીય વિનંતી અને આજીજી પછી મારી કૉલેજના ભૂતપૂર્વ વિદ્યાર્થી મંડળની જવાબદારી સંભાળતા શિક્ષકે તેને મારો ફોન નંબર આપ્યો.

આ વાતનો અંત સુખદ આવશે કે દુખદ? તમે શા માટે એમ માનો છો?

એ દિવાળી વૅકેશનમાં મનીષા અને તેનો પતિ અશોક ભારત આવ્યાં. તેમણે થોડા દિવસ અમારી સાથે આણંદમાં ગાળ્યા. મારી મનીષા એવી ને એવી જ દેખાતી હતી. તેનામાં એ જ ઉષ્મા અને પ્રેમ છલકાતાં હતાં. તેની ખોટ જેટલી મને સાલતી હતી તેટલી જ મારી ખોટ તેને સાલતી હતી. તેણે કપરા સંજોગોનો સામનો કર્યો હતો. છતાં હંમેશની જેમ જીવનમાં સુખ શોધી કાઢ્યું હતું. તમે જાણો છો, 24 કેરટ (શુદ્ધ) સોનાને કાટ લાગતો નથી !

અને આજકાલ અમે ફરીથી સાથે છીએ; હંમેશની ઉત્તમ સખીઓ.

તારે એક મિત્ર છે.

મૈત્રી આશીર્વાદ છે.

હૃદયથી હૃદયની મૈત્રી એવી એક મહાન વસ્તુ છે જે જીવનને જીવવા લાયક બનાવે છે. આપણી સાથે શું થાય છે તે મહત્ત્વનું નથી પરંતુ આપણું કોઈ પ્રિયજન આપણાં સુખ અને દુઃખનું ભાગીદાર છે એ જાણી રાહત થાય છે. કોઈ મિત્રની સાચી સહાનુભૂતિ દુનિયામાં સૌથી વધુ રાહતરૂપ છે.

જ્યારે આપણું દુઃખ એટલું વધી જાય કે આપણને લાગે કે આપણે તે એક્લા સહન કરી શકીશું નહીં, ત્યારે એવો મિત્ર શક્તિનો સ્રોત બને છે. જીવન જ્યારે સરળ (ચિંતામુક્ત) હોય ત્યારે મૈત્રી આપણા સુખમાં વધારો કરે છે. આ દુનિયામાં સંપત્તિ થોડા સમય માટે સંતોષ અને ખુશી આપી શકે પણ મિત્રનો સાથ તો અનંત ખજાનો છે. જીવનનાં દુઃખ સારા મિત્રોને વધુ નજીક લાવશે અને આ સંબંધ દરેક વીતી જતા વરસ સાથે વધુ ને વધુ અમૂલ્ય બનશે.

આપણા જીવનમાં ઘણા આવે છે પણ આપણા હૃદયમાં બહુ થોડા રહે છે. એક સાચા મિત્રનો પ્રેમ અને નિકટતા આખા વિશ્વની સૌથી સુંદર ચીજ છે. આંખો બંધ કરીને મિત્રને યાદ કરો અને તમારું હૃદય મધુરતમ લાગણીઓથી છલકાઈ જશે.
